Cookies and trackers

1. In brief
- The BySince platform uses no advertising cookies, no audience measurement tools and no social network trackers.
- It uses only cookies and local storage entries that are strictly necessary for you to log in, for the security of your account, or to remember a display setting you have chosen.
- These trackers are exempt from consent. That is why the platform does not display a cookie banner.
2. What are we talking about?
A cookie is a small file that the site places in your browser and that the browser sends back to it with every request. The browser's local storage (“localStorage” and “sessionStorage”) keeps small pieces of information on your device; they are not sent to the server. The law treats both techniques in the same way: Article 82 of the French Data Protection Act (“loi Informatique et Libertés”) requires your consent, except for trackers that are strictly necessary for the service you request.
3. Cookies placed by the platform
| Name | Purpose | When is it placed? | Duration | Consent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Session cookie (named PHPSESSID by default) |
To keep you logged in from one page to the next; to protect forms. Sent only to the site itself (“SameSite=Strict” attribute) and, on a secure connection, only over HTTPS. | As soon as a session is needed, in particular at login. | For the duration of the session. | Exempt: strictly necessary. |
bysince_trusted_device |
To recognise a trusted device so that the two-factor authentication code is not requested again. | Only if you use two-factor authentication and declare the device as trusted. | 30 days, extended at each login. | Exempt: security, feature you request. |
tutorial_completed_… |
To remember that a tutorial has already been seen, so that it is not shown again. | When you complete or close a tutorial. | 1 year. | Exempt: interface preference. |
bysince_order_… |
To remember the order in which you have arranged cards on screen. | When you rearrange cards. | 1 year. | Exempt: interface preference. |
download_token |
To tell the page that the generation of a PDF has finished. | When you download a PDF. | 60 seconds. | Exempt: strictly necessary. |
The interface language is not stored in a cookie: it appears in the address of the pages and, if you are logged in, in your profile.
4. Entries in the browser's local storage
| Key | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
bysince-theme, ea/colorScheme |
To remember the display theme chosen: light, dark or automatic. | Until you clear it. |
bysince.collapsed.… |
To remember the sections you have collapsed. | Until you clear it. |
currentUrl |
To take you back to the page you came from after editing a sheet. | Until you clear it. |
| State of the expert review editor | To remember the blocks collapsed while a sheet is being reviewed. | Until you clear it. |
url, exploration_bookmark_filter, activitySkillsExpanded_…, bysince.carnetPromotionDismissedCount (session storage) |
To remember, for the life of the tab, a return page, a filter, expanded items, or an information banner you have closed. | Until the tab is closed. |
This information stays on your device. It contains neither your name nor your identifier, is not sent to the server and is not used to track you.
5. Cartographe mobile application
The Cartographe application does not authenticate by cookie: it presents to the platform an access token stored on the device. This token can be revoked from the application or from the platform's administration. The captures made remain on the device until they are synchronised.
6. Resources loaded from third-party services
The platform's fonts, icons and scripts are served by the platform itself. They do not trigger any call to a third party. A few screens are exceptions:
| Screen | Resource | Third-party service |
|---|---|---|
| Editing a learning path | TinyMCE text editor | jsDelivr |
| Searching an image library | Previews of the images offered | The image library queried: Wikimedia Commons, Pexels, Unsplash, Pixabay or Flickr |
When you open one of these screens, your browser contacts the third-party service directly, which then receives your IP address and technical information about your browser. The platform places no cookies on their behalf. These screens are reserved for authorised users and cannot be accessed without logging in.
The public pages (legal pages, login, badge verification pages) load no third-party resources. The public page of a badge offers a sharing link to LinkedIn: nothing is transmitted to LinkedIn unless and until you click on that link.
7. Managing cookies
You may at any time clear cookies and local storage from your browser settings, or block them. If you block the session cookie, you will no longer be able to log in. Clearing the other items simply resets your display preferences to their default values.
To remove a trusted device, log out and then clear the site's cookies on that device.
8. Changes
Should the platform come to use a tracker that is subject to consent, this page would be updated and your agreement would be sought beforehand, by means of a banner making it as simple to refuse as to accept.
